AM

60 minutes on the elliptical this morning.  I am amazed at how tought this work out really is.  I get my heart rate up to around 140 and the resistence is tough.  I also did some leg extensions and some crunches on the ball.  Calf is feeling better with the break from the pounding but still got a way to go to get where I want it to be.  Hopefully with the tough elliptical workouts I won't lose too much cardio and can jump right back into marathon training when I'm healed.

PM

30 more minutes on the elliptical.  Really good workout.  More core work and a few leg extensions.

I use the elliptical, bike and swimming to stay in shape last summer (injury, off for about 6 weeks) and again in the winter (surgery off for 4 weeks). I feel like I was able to regain my running form pretty quick.

What are you doing for the calf?

From JeffC on Tue, Mar 18, 2008 at 10:33:10

Nothing special for the calf, just taking an anti-inflammatory prescription and a break from running until it feels better. I am hopeful the break from the pounding will allow it to heal.....so far so good.

I would start in on some ice/heat therapy (ice 7 mins. heat 5 repeat and do it at least 2-3 times a day) Also get a massage or I am a big fan of scrapping (pt's call it aystem) I do this to my self and think it works great. I can give you a link to the tools if you are interested. This will all speed upl the healing process.

Whatever advice or other options you can offer would be great. I forgot to mention I also roll my lower calfs twice a day using a padded dumbell shaped thing (not sure how to explain it). It gave me good relief when I had shin splints and I figure it couldn't hurt now to kinda massage the muscle. I have also done the RICE method a couple of times in the last few days.

Jeff perfect I am a big beliver in self care. The calf rolling is great. The way I massage my calfs is I put the front of my shin on the bed so the belly of the mucsle is exposed then with my fist I work from top to bottom. Hope things clear up quick:)
