40 minutes on the elliptical.  Finished watching the end of I Robot today.  Good thing I have a good assortment of movies to get me through this indoor training stuff.  I go in for an MRI today to discover the extent of the damage in my back.  If I had to guess, I would say that I have re-herniated my L5 S1 disk that I had operated on 15 years ago.  I should be meeting with the doctor to discuss the results by early next week.  Hopefully it is something that can be corrected with therapy rather then surgery.

How are things going?

From rdrunner on Thu, Sep 13, 2007 at 11:08:20

Thank you for checking in on me Sasha. Things are going better now. I received an epidural steroid injection in my back about two weeks ago and am up and running again and feeling pretty good. The results of the MRI showed some disk degenration on the two lowest lumbar disks in my back and a mild herniation on one of them. The nerves in the lower back were being irritated by the bulging disks and herniation and the steriod injection seems to have settled the inflamation allowed the irritation to heal a bit. I imagine this will be something I will have to deal with for the rest of my life. Overall things are good, it could be a lot worse. I appologize for not keeping everyone posted on the blog but I plan on going back and updating my mileage over the next few days. Last week was my first week back and I logged 28 miles at an average 9:00/mile pace. This week I am up to 26 miles counting today at an average 8:30/mile pace. I'll probably end this week at around 40-45 miles and then just follow my taper schedule that I had when I started this whole journey. The mileage for the taper weeks will be 42, 30 and 13. All my miles these days are just base miles, speed work is out at this point. Just trying to regain some of my lost fitness due to a 4+ week layoff in which I ran about 40 miles total. My calf muscles are sore but that is about it, I feel pretty good considering what I have been through. I will be at the SGM, however my time goal has been revised to 3:30-4:00. The boston qualifier will have to wait ro another year.

Jeff its good to hear you are back on the road, that was welcome good news... I had to pull out of SGM, I have a stess fracture in my leg, bummer. But I have been hitting the elliptical pretty hard the last couple of weeks, the Doctor said 6 to 8 weeks of no running. I can bike or swim or do the elliptical, so I chose the latter as I don't have a bike. It is good to know you are back running and I wish you the best, keep safe.
