I cut back the mileage to six today to try and give the calves a small break.  Spent a little extra time stretching after the run today to try and really loosen up those tight muscles and get some of the soreness out.  I am finally starting to feel some releif but it is slow in coming.  The back and hip felt average today and I was able to step up the pace for one mile today and really get the heart rate going.  I have been trying to concentrate on my form the last few runs and staying relaxed when picking up the pace.  Sloppy form may have been one of the causes that caused all the aggravation in my back and hip so extra attention to form will hopefully pay off.  Based on my plan for tomorrow, I should end the week with 47.1 miles.  My first taper week won't be much of a cut back with about 42 miles, after that it drops to 30 and then 13 in the final week before the marathon.  Depending on the level of soreness I may cut that 42 mile week back a bit further to gain some extra recovery but at this point I can't afford to cut back too much and lose fitness.  I will just have to take it a day at a time and listen to the body.

My take on cutting back - it makes sense when there is something to cut back from to begin with, and when you have high hopes for a key race. If the race is not that important, or you know you are not in shape to run really well, it is better to essentially train through it, may be cut back the last couple of days or so. I would definitely not cut back to 13 the last week, keep it at no less than 25 if your health permits.

Thank you for your comments Sasha. I was hoping you would comment on my taper because I wasn't really sure what to do. I do care about the race as far as breaking 4 hours or maybe 3:45 but I wasn't sure if that much of a cutback was necessary. I may try to raise the 30 mile week up a bit and keep the week before the race around 20-25.

I agree with Sasha in your case I would do something like 43 / 35 / and then 25 the 5 days prior to the marathon looking something like this:

MON - 7

TUE - 7

WED - 5

THU - 4

FRI - 2

SAT - RACE

Thank you ArmyRunner. That looks like a perfect schedule for me. Thanks for the advice guys. You're and animal ArmyRunner, looking at your weekly mileage you are out of control. Makes me feel like an even bigger wimp than I already am.
