It was ugly and a bit of a disapointment on a perfect day for running.  Had a major self-destruction the last few miles of the race and couldn't even PR let alone BQ.  I'm not exactly sure what happened but it wasn't pretty.

The huge upside to this potential learning experience was being able to run with a stellar group of guys and enjoy some good company for most of the race.  I also got to cross the finish line with MarkO as we helped each other survive the last mile or so.

Overall a great race weekend and it was great to see all my running pals at the fires and also many at the finish.  It was also great to meet all the new guys and gals I hadn't met prior to this race.

Meg BQ'd again, bum shoulder and all.  Even with her lack of training this summer due to her shoulder she came in this year and just tore it up again.

Here are a few notes on why I think my performance this year was not what I was expecting:

1.  Injury during the training cycle this year and as a result fewer quality long runs.

2.  Overall weight was up a couple of pounds from last year.  I really need to find some self control and lose the extra weight.

3.  Possible bug still in my system from a cold that had been trying to get me the whole week before the race.  Stomach was not feeling real great from about mile 3 on.

I think the number one reason for my breakdown was my overall fitness and conditioning.  My legs were completely trashed by mile 20 and I had nothing left to give on the fastest part of the course.  My lack of hill training is probably partly to blame for the way my legs felt near the end of the race.  While my overall mileage for the year is up compared to last year my number of long runs is down compared to last year and I was really feeling it.  Also, my overall trainig pace is up for the year compared to last year as well but the number of faster tempo runs and moderate paced runs aren't where they need to be.  My fueling and pre-race hydration went really well so I don't really think those were factors at all.

dang sorry to hear. Must be frustrating not to have an idea why you hit the wall hard. Do you think you had fueled up and had taken in enough water before hand? Always a good idea to start loading up on the carbs a couple of days before the race. Pasta, rice, etc. I like Quinoa, lots of carbs and protein in that stuff. Better luck next time!

I am glad you had a good weekend at least! Friends make everything better.

Sorry for the self destruction, that is a bummer. Congrats to Meg!

Way to hang in there Jeff, sorry I wasn't able to hook up with you and sorry for those last few miles it can been very dissapointing sometimes... Way to gut it out, there will be better days ahead.

Congrats to Meg too, that is awesome.

Have a safe trip home.

Sorry it did not turn out the way you wanted ... but how wonderful to be able to get through it with Mark!

Plus ... you have gone through a lot this year. Do not discount that.

A huge congrats to your amazing wife! Meg really is incredible!

Sounds like the race started out well and overall you had a good time. Sorry to hear about the self-destruct at the end but it is still a decent time.

Congrats to Meg on another BQ.

Keep trucking along. Everyone has days like this. So good to see you, even though things didn't turn out as you hoped.

I'm so sorry that things didn't turn out the way you wanted. I really thought you were going to nail it this year. You have a great attitude and I know you will get that BQ if you keep at it.

From Mike Warren on Sun, Oct 04, 2009 at 23:17:22 from 208.117.124.133

Jeff, I had a great time running with you this weekend. You really are a great runner! Don't worry about the BQ, I guarantee it will happen for you. We just need to keep having fun and working little by little. I would love to run a race with you again. Get healed up and we will both get back after it.

Hey man, what a bummer. I heard from Slick what happened. Well, at least you got to hang with Mark until the end. Very cool. Hey, it was good to finally meet you and Meg in person before the bus ride and congrats to Meg for BQing. Niiice!!!

I thought you had this for sure! I felt my legs a lot at the end too. I think I will change one of my 20 milers to a 22 or 23 and lift for my quads a lot more this year. I hope that will help me finish stronger.

From Huans32 on Mon, Oct 05, 2009 at 14:03:06 from 138.64.2.76

It was great to race with you again man. And meet up with you again close to the last few miles. You really did help me out alot in that last bit to get a PR. We will get it man. And at least yours will be a little easier with it being 3:20 soon. Awesome effort and looking forward to running the series with you.

Hey thanks all for the comments. I appreciate you checking in. After saying "Never Again!!!" at the finish line I got up this morning and signed up for the runner's series again this year. I guess I'll just keep doing as Paul suggested....trucking along....

From Kelli on Mon, Oct 05, 2009 at 15:41:00 from 71.219.96.151

Ah, running is much like childbirth. We say we will never do it again, but how soon we forget the pain....

From Cal on Mon, Oct 05, 2009 at 16:16:22 from 66.133.117.3

Keep at it Jeff. You've been running some great times this year and you did really well to get yourself ready for this race with the recent injury setbacks. Another few weeks of training and it may have all come together...

From Dave S on Tue, Oct 06, 2009 at 10:48:07 from 4.254.226.32

Jeff, sorry things didn't turn out quite like you wanted. I agree with everything Cal said. You did run some huge PRs this year. Even the elites can have a bad day in the marathon without knowing exactly why.

I looked around for you a bit after the race but it's tough to find anybody in that large of a crowd.

From Smooth on Thu, Oct 08, 2009 at 18:17:02 from 174.23.252.244

I enjoy reading your report. It was fun seeing you at the expo. Sorry it didn't turn out this time. We learn something with every race. You have definitely trained hard. I thought for sure you would nail that BQ this year. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on what to improve or tweak on for your next training cycle! You're AWESOME!

From Rhett on Fri, Oct 09, 2009 at 13:59:35 from 74.42.168.199

Back to the drawing board Jeff. It will come though. Just keep at it. At least you got to run with Mark. When I saw your times 1 second apart, I figured you guys had run together most the race.

From chadl on Wed, Oct 21, 2009 at 22:51:00 from 174.23.97.36

It was great running with you as always. We'll get there.
