Ran three miles at marathon pace today.  It seemed too hard.  I donated blood last Friday and am probably still feeling the effects, in fact it may have cost me a shot at a BQ in the marathon.  I have heard differing stories about donating blood while training, I just hope I can feel better running at marathon pace on race day than I did today.  I have also had some stomache issues the last couple of days and the problem may be related to that as well.  I'm sure the combination of the two isn't helping me right now.  As of today the confidence is pretty low for a BQ but I still think I have a good shot at going under 3:30.

I think its just the transition from hard running to taper. My runs have felt hard lately too. We will be ready to rumble marathon day.

This probably isn't what you want to hear, but last time I donated blood in the middle of a training cycle it took me about 3-4 weeks to fully recover.

On the other hand most people I've talked to said they recovered in 1-2 weeks so you'll probably be OK but I think it's safe to say that your workouts this week have been affected. Just keep enjoying the taper, getting good sleep, visualize good things happening at SGM, and everything should come together pretty well for you. I think your still looking really good for the BQ.

I've had some good and bad experiences with blood donation during the marathon season. (I actually had a PR marathon time within 10 days of giving blood once... But I wouldn't do it again!)

Hopefully you'll be ok, and with 2 full weeks in between you should be. Stay positive and run smart!

Thanks for sharing your experiences guys, it helps to know what others have done. I will be running a couple of miles next week at marathon pace and I think that will be a good gauge of where I am at. We'll see how it goes.

Jeff you nut... I still think you will be okay to BQ, you did a good thing donating blood but next time wait until after the marathon to be so giving;-) HaHa. Hang in there, I believe in good karma so one good deed deserves another.

Be safe out there!

Keep positive, we all have doubts when we are going after goals!

I have donated 2 times this yr and both before races. One only a few days before Bryce Canyon. And had a PR there and also other was a marathon. But that was like 9 days out. Dont know if it effected Ogden much. But I am sure it didnt for the half. Just make sure to drink plenty of fluid and you should be fine man.

From Dave S on Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 18:20:40

It's only been 6 days since you donated and 9 until SG. One thing for sure is you will be more recovered for the race than you are today. You'll do great.
